Prague - The Commissioner General for the Czech Republic’s participation at EXPO 2005, Mr. Vladimír Darjanin, has been received today by Mr. Naotake Onaga, Vice-Governor of Toyama Prefecture. The purpose of the meeting was to establish partnership between Toyama Prefecture and Liberec Region. In the course of his previous visit, Commissioner General Darjanin was received by Mr. Masashi Mori, Mayor of Toyama City, who expressed his support to the side events being prepared as part of the Week of Czech Glass, including a workshop and an exhibition in Toyama.

The Commissioner General has conveyed to the Vice-Governor an official salutation from the President of the Liberec Region, Mr. Pavel Pavlík, and has introduced the region as a suitable partner for Toyama Prefecture. Mr. Onaga has evaluated positively the long-standing successful cooperation with the Czech Republic in the field of cultural exchange, and has voiced the interest of the prefecture in expanding this cooperation to other areas as well. Mr. Darjanin in this context pointed out the recent official visit of Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan, to the Czech Republic and the bilateral agreement on strategic cooperation between the Czech Republic and Japan in the area of trade and culture, signed by the Japanese Prime Minister and Mr. Vladimír Špidla, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.

Mr. Onaga has shown keen interest in the progress of the Czech Republic’s preparations for EXPO 2005 and in the content of the Czech pavilion, which, as Mr. Onaga said, will significantly contribute to extending the Japan’s general public’s interest in and awareness of the Czech Republic. In conclusion, Vice-Governor Onaga emphasized the importance of establishing contacts between regions in the various parts of the globe, and wished every success to the Czech Republic’s participation at EXPO 2005.
