Akademický architekt Daniel Dvoøák![]() Director General of the National Theatre He studied architecture and stage design with professor J. Svoboda at the School of Applied Arts in Prague and later at the Akademie der bildenden Künste with prof. L. Egg in Vienna. After studying in the USA he worked as a theatre, film and television designer. So far he has created more than 200 settings home and abroad (Argentina, France, Italy, Korea, Germany, Poland, Austria, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland). In 1988 he co-founded the experimental Opera Furore with Jiøí Nekvasil. Two years later he became the intendant of the Prague Chamber Opera, which he reorganised together with Jiøí Nekvasil to Opera Mozart. Since July 1998 he had been the director of the Prague State Opera, starting July 2002 he was appointed the position of the general director of The National Theatre in Prague. He was the stage designer and co-producer of all the productions by Opera Furore and of most of the productions by Opera Mozart (e.g. Faust, With a Violin into Iron, Andy Warhol, The Best of Mozart, Figaro? Figaro!, Play Magic Flute, Don Juan Bastien). He contributed not only as stage designer but also as a screenwriter, librettist and author of directorial concepts. In 1992 he co-founded (with producer Jiøí Herold) summer season Mozart productions in the Theatre of Estates and designed stage decorations for the productions – Die Zauberflöte (1992), Cosi fan tutte (1993), La Clemenza di Tito (1995 and 2000), Le Nozze di Figaro (1996), Don Giovanni (1998). He has been cooperating with the National Theatre in Prague since 1983 and created 17 stage designs here, among others Macbeth, Il Trovatore, Lucia di Lammermoor, The Devil and the Kate, Coppelia, Emperor of Atlantis, The Man Who Confused his Wife with a Hat, Cosi fan tutte, After Rehearsal, The Comedian. The Prague State Opera was during the time of his management nominated for the prestigious Radok award in the categories The Theatre of the Year and the Production of the Year. As a stage designer he created at the Prague State Opera sets for especially world premieres Bubu from Montparnass by E. F. Burian (1999), Dorian Gray by I. Steiner (2000), Phaedra by E. Viklicky (2000), Die Physiker by A. Pflüger (2000), Circus Terra by T. Madsen (in co-production with Den Norske Opera – 2002), ballet Golem by Z. Matìjù (2001), and also for productions Der Freischütz (C. M. Weber), Il Trovatore (G. Verdi), Der Polnische Jude (K. Weiss), The Fall of the House of Usher (P. Glass), and Es War Einmal (A. Zemlinsky). Abroad he has lately created for example stage designs for Janáèek’s The Cunning Little Vixen (1999 Palermo, 2000 Buenos Aires, 2002 Trier), Gazzaniga’s Don Giovanni (Hamburg 2001) and Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (Hamburg 2000), M.Gurlit’s Die Soldaten (Nantes 2002), E.D’Albert’s Die Tiefland (Trier 2002). As a specialist on complicated monumental stage designs, he was invited to collaborate on two greatest Czech musicals of the past years, Dracula and Monte Cristo. The dimension counterpart is created by his work for marionette film and especially marionette theatre. In 1991 he co-founded the National Marionette Theatre and he is co-author of the most successful Czech theatre production after 1990 – the marionette version of Don Giovanni (more than 2500 performances since 1991, guest performances in France, Island, Italy, Germany, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland). He also created a miniature baroque theatre stage machinery for marionettes (Baroque World Magical Theatre, Orfeo ed Euridice) and series of Czech national fairy tales (1995 -1997). In 2002 he co-founded Museum of Marionettes in Èeský Krumlov. Many of his theatre works have been transmitted by the Czech Television (e.g. The Best of Mozart, Jennifer, Bubu from Montparnass, Es was einmal, Orfeo ed Euridice, Macbeth, Play Magic Flute, Golem, Signorina Gioventú, La Boutique fantastique, European tourism, Ulysses’ return). He exhibits at individual and group expositions. At the Prague Quadriennale 1999 (the largest world exposition of stage design) the Czech exposition with his participation was awarded the main prize – the Golden Triga. He was awarded the Alfred Radok Award 2000 for the "stage design of the year 1999". His artistic concept of the film The Rebels, directed by Filip Renè was nominated for the Czech Lion 2001 award. In 2001 he was awarded the Award of the Masaryk Academy for stage design. In 2002 he was appointed Chevalier de L’ordre des Artes et des Lettres by the French Government. |
