Uniqueness of the region: a colourful tourist region that offers everything from mountains, landscape architecture and a spa, to grape harvests. Significant historical event: the arrival of Cyril and Methodius in Moravia. Outstanding historical personality: the missionaries Cyril and Methodius, the teacher of our nation and humanist John Amos Comenius, entrepreneur and famous shoemaker Tomáš Baťa Significant cultural monument: there are 9 national cultural heritage sites in the region - Kroměříž Chateau with the Květná a Podzámecká gardens (on the UNESCO list of heritage sites), the ancient settlement Sv. Klimenta u Osvětiman, a group of sites in the Great Moravian residential agglomeration Staré Město - Uherské Hradiště - Modrá, the Pustevny complex in Beskydy, Valašský (Moravian Wallachia) Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, the Antifascist Resistance Memorial in Ploština, Buchlovice Chateau, Buchlova Castle, Vizovice Chateau Significant natural locality: White Carpathian Mountains Protected Nature Reserve and UNESCO biosphere reservation, Beskydy Protected Nature Reserve, Chřiby Nature Reserve and other nature parks. Significant investment project: Conversion of Administrative Building 21, "Baťa's Skyscraper" (dating from 1930) into the new Zlín Regional Authority and Inland Revenue Building. This leading example of modern Czechoslovak constructive architecture designed by Arch. Vladimír Karfík in the period between the two world wars, will be turned into a state of the art "intelligent" building that meets the highest European standards for modern administrative operation by the end of 2004. At the same time, the reconstruction is designed to sensitively preserve this important national heritage site. Other projects include the ISPA project A Čistá Bečva and the archaeological open-air museum in Modrá. Outstanding contemporary personality: entrepreneur Tomáš Baťa Jr., traveller and journalist Miroslav Zikmund, shoe expert Jan Pivečka, actor and comedian Boleslav Polívka, folk singer Jarmila Šuláková, musician Jiří Pavlica, writer Ludvík Vaculík Typical product: shoes, pneumatics, glass, plum brandy, wine. Typical food: traditional Czech specialities - pig killing specialities, smoked sheep's cheese, home smoked meat, sausages, kyselice, valašské frgály and little yeast cakes (especially popular at weddings). Folklore: living folklore regions of Valašsko, Haná and Slovácko - frequent festivities.
