WELCOME TO THE CZECH REPUBLIC'S REGIONS
Usti region![]()
Seat of the region: Ústí nad Labem
Governor: Ing. Jiří Šulc Area: 5 335 km2 Number of inhabitants: 820.000
Uniqueness of the region: Usti Region, one of the most industrial areas of the Czech Republic, used to serve many years as the energy resource of the country (leading position in the extraction of brown coal and power production). After a reduction of the coal extraction in the 1990s and a revitalisation of the landscape, this region has been regaining its reputation of an area with singular natural beauties of European relevance, such as the Czech Switzerland - Pravčice Gate National Park (Národní park České Švýcarsko - Pravčická brána) and other unique formations of sandstone rocks. Significant historical event: Historically important events going beyond the boundaries of the Czech Republic include e.g. the defeat of Napoleon's army in the battle of Chlumec in 1813, a clash between allied armies of Russia, Prussia and France led by Field Marshall K. Schwarzenberg and the French army led by General D. R. Vandamme. Outstanding historical personality: Benedikt Rejt from Pístov (1453-1534) - royal master builder, prominent Renaissance
architect. He was the author of the design of Saint Nicholas Church in Louny and other Late Gothic buildings. Significant cultural monument: Romanesque rotunda on Říp hill, built in the 12th century; Monastery in Osek; many castles and chateaux, e.g. Duchcov chateau (place of residence of G. Casanova), Hasištejn castle, Střekov castle, and others. Significant natural locality: Protected Landscape Area of Labské pískovce - 245 km2 of Tiské, Děčínské and Jetřichovické cliffs - singular sandstone rock formations and rock gates. Significant investment project: Construction of the Mariánský Bridge in Ústí nad Labem, opened on 30 July 1998. This
modern atypical structure won a number of awards (Prize of the European Association for Steel Structures in 1999;
the best implemented construction with a steel structure in 2000), and in the survey of readers of the review Structural
Engineering International 02/2001 the bridge was included among the ten most interesting world constructions of the past ten
years. Outstanding contemporary personality: From the world of sports - Ivan Hlinka, coach of the Czech national ice-hockey
team who, together with his team, earned the Gold Medal in the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano. The famous "Nagano" team
included Robert Reichel and Vladimír Růžička, born in the North Bohemia region. Typical product: The joint-stock company Český porcelán Dubí, a.s., is a well-known manufacturer of the popular
"porcelain of generations" - porcelain with an onion design. The tradition of this production dates back to 1864. Typical food: Czech cuisine is generally famous with its bread and fruit dumplings, and also with inventive potato dishes. As to beverages, the region produces quality wines, and the local beer production has a tradition of over 700 years. Folklore: Singular elements in folk architecture on the Děčín area are timbered cottages with special support structures (Umgebinde houses). Tourist destination: Czech Switzerland National Park (NP České Švýcarsko): Protected Landscape Area of České středohoří Mountains: The most original and, at the same time, most beautiful mountain range in the Czech Republic. The volcanic origin imprinted characteristic shapes of a mound or a cone to these mountains. It is a singular landscape with a lot of castle ruins, observation towers and other monuments.
