Uniqueness of the region: Mountain hotel Ještěd
The mountain hotel Ještěd was built in the years 1966-1972. Architect Karel Hubáček won for the project a prestige Perret reward
from the International Architect Union in the year 1969. This object was declared for the building of century within
the Czech Republic in the year 2000.
Significant historical event: The Ninths Liberec Professional Company for Chemical Protection became a part of the NATO
SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) units in March 1999, in the context of the Czech Republic entering the NATO forces.
Outstanding historical personality: Albrecht Václav Eusebius from Valdštejn
Duke, * 24. September 1583, † 25. February 1634, duke of Frýdland since the year 1627, duke of Zaháň since 1627, duke of
Meklenburg since 1628 - 30 and duke of Hlohov since 1632, imperial generalissimos since the year 1625. He served
in standing army against Bocskay since the year 1604, was colonel of Bohemian estates since 1606 and colonel of Moravian
estates since 1609. He defected to the emperor Ferdinand II in the year 1619. He commanded imperial regiment, due to
confiscations after the White Mountain battle acquired an enormous property in north-eastern Bohemia, was designated as the
commander of Prague garrison and as the country commander of Bohemia in the year 1621. Was designated commander in chief
of imperial army in April 1625. Was declared as traitor and murdered in Cheb in February 1634.
Significant cultural monument:
One of the most important monuments in the Liberec region is the State castle Sychrov, which is located approximately
20 km from the Liberec regional capital town.
Among further significant cultural monuments belongs without any doubt the Frýdlant castle. This is one of the most important
ancient monument complexes within Bohemia. The area represents a very valuable connection of two architectonic formations -
a middle ages fortified castle and a renaissance castle. Foundation of the Frýdland castle is dated back to middle
of the 13th century.
Significant natural locality: Rock Towns (Hruboskalsko, Maloskalsko)
The area is created mainly by block sandstones, which were deposited here during the Secondary area at the borders of sea
at that time. The present appearance of the rock formations is the result of a long-term influence of forces from
the Earth interior and the permanent erosion activity. The symbol of this area is a unique formation called Trosky, with
remains of a castle located on it.
Significant investment project: Industrial zone Liberec - South
The area has an extent of approximately 120 ha, and about 75 % of it is intended for development. It is composed of two
parts separated by bio-corridor and bio-center, and the whole area is compact having a convenient terrain morphology. The
zone is connected to four-lanes speedway coming from Prague and Mladá Boleslav by a high capacity city communication. It is
accessible by municipal public transportation, prospectively also with extension to the present tram line. The area is located
near communications going to Germany and Poland (with the prospect to be completed as a speedway communication) and
near railway network. The zone territory has a completed infrastructure (backbone communication, main engineering networks,
energy media having a good capacity).
Outstanding contemporary personality: Karel Hubáček
He was born at 24 February 1924 in Prague, where he finished architecture studies at the Czech Technological University
(ČVUT) in the year 1949. He practiced in Stavoprojekt Liberec since the year 1951, and later on became director of the SIAL.
He is holder of numerous awards: for example of the Perret award (1969), Grand Prix biennial event Interarch award in Sofia
(1989), Herder award (1996). His transmitter on the Ještěd mountain was appraised, next to the Perret award, as the
Czech construction of the century.
Stanislav Libenský, Jaroslava Brychtová, author couple of glass art designers
Stanislav Libenský (1921) together with Jaroslava Brychtová (1924) create couple of personalities of art design, which
cooperation enabled to use glass as a material adequate to new creative tasks in the second half of the 20th century.
Typical product: glass products, jewelry from Czech garnets, components for automobile industry
Folklore: "Dlaskův statek"
Within the distance of 3 km from Turnov is located the "Dlaskův statek" - typical and preciously preserved example
of a Jizera-territory house.
"Vísecká rychta" (Village magistrate's house of Víska) Vísecká rychta, founded in the year 1797, is the biggest
half-timbered house building within Bohemia. Here there can be seen the basic parts of a rustic building (main sitting room,
black kitchen, pantry chamber, cattle barn).
Tourist destination: Tourist centers of the western Krkonoše mountains
The highest mountains of the Czech Republic with the dominant Sněžka mountain towering to 1602 meters. The Krkonoše National
Park is the bio-sphere reservation of UNESCO. Krkonoše mountains create a natural north-east border of the Czech sphere
basin. These mountains got also to the Czech fairy tales, mainly due to the well known character of Krakonoš, who dwells there
and supervises the mountains.
