Born on October 13, 1957 in Olomouc, where he also studied at a grammar school. After graduation he was accepted at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Palacký University in Olomouc, Department of Precision Engineering - Optics.
 

During 1982 - 1994, he worked for optics manufacturer Meopta Přerov. In 1984 he acquired the title of Doctor of Natural Sciences in the field of physical electronics and optics. In Meopta, he worked his way up from the position of optical technologist to becoming head of information and organizational services. He was also a member of the board of directors of the company.
 

He entered politics shortly after November 1989 as a member of the Civic Forum, up until that time he had not been a member of any party. In August 1991, he became a member of the ODS party, he is the chairman of the ODS Regional Association in the Olomouc region. Since November 1994, he has been a member of the Olomouc administration. In the 1994 - 1998 period he was the mayor of Olomouc, then from November 2002 he was a member of the city council. In the 2000 regional elections, he was elected member of the Olomouc Region Administration and Deputy President (he was in charge of finance, transport and regional assets). As of December 2, 2004, he has been President of the Olomouc Region.
 

Ivan Kosatík is married and has two sons, Lukáš and Tomáš, aged 18 and 16. His wife Zdenka works as a physician at the Olomouc University Hospital.
