Lufthansa Past and PresentThe company Deutsche Lufthansa was established in 1926. Today, Lufthansa is a fully privatized group with about 350 subsidiaries and operates branches all over the world. Its main headquarters are in Frankfurt, Cologne upon the Rhine, Hamburg, Munich and Berlin. The company specializes in domestic and international flights, passenger and cargo transport with 450 destinations throughout the world. Its flight schedule contains approximately 3,500 flights a day. Lufthansa is one of the world's ten largest airlines. It employs 94 thousand people all over the world and has a fleet of 320 airplanes. Lufthansa is a member of the international Star Alliance (www.staralliance.com), airline alliance established in 1997 as the first global airline alliance to offer its customers absolute availability of transport and convenient flight connections throughout the world. Lufthansa in the Czech RepublicLufthansa has been established in the Czech Republic for 38 years. Its first flight from Frankfurt to Praha to Frankfurt took place on April 2, 1966. Its first branch in Prague was opened after the introduction of regular 'Frankfurt - Praha - Frankfurt' flights on June 1, 1966. At present, Lufthansa has is based at Ruzyne airport in Prague. Today, Lufthansa operates eight routes between the Czech Republic and Germany; Prague to Frankfurt, Munich, and Düsseldorf, and in cooperation with ÈSA also routes from Prague to Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart, Berlin and Cologne upon the Rhine. On May 3, 2004, Lufthansa launched a new destination in Slovakia, offering two flights a day between Bratislava and Munich. Lufthansa also provides convenient flights to Japan with a stopover in Frankfurt. These flights depart from Prague five times a week. Leaving Prague at 10:30, passengers land in Nagoia at 8:15 on the following day. This destination is one of the reasons why Lufthansa has become an official air services partner for the EXPO 2005 Aichi Exposition. ServicesInternet on boardOn May 17, 2004, Lufthansa became the first airline to offer passengers the opportunity of trying a high-speed broadband internet connection during a flight on an Airbus A340-300. The plane is equipped with the Lufthansa FlyNet system that - in connection with the services provided by Boeing Connexion - provide unrestricted access to the Internet while on board. Business Class and long-distance flightsWhen flying long distances, Business Class passengers can enjoy new, 2 metre long beds that are more spacious and thus make travelling even more comfortable. A new type of seat was first introduced for flights around the world in Airbuses A340-600 and A330-300. The new seats will be gradually installed in Lufthansa's entire long-distance fleet of about 80 airplanes. Electronic air ticket etix®From April 1, 2004, electronic air tickets can be reserved with Lufthansa (etix®) even without indicating the number of an internationally valid or Miles & More card). Travellers from Prague can reserve electronic tickets for all flights operated by Lufthansa on the following telephone number 220 114 456, or on-line at www.lufthansa.cz or at a popular travel agency accredited by IATA. The departure lounge of Ruzynì airport provides travellers with carry-on luggage with an automatic self-service check-in device ('Quick Check-In terminal') near counter 21. Program for regular individual customers and business customersThe Miles & More program is designed for Lufthansa's regular individual customers and it offers a broad range of advantages and bonuses.
