Exhibition

The exhibition "From Brussels 1958 to Aichi 2005" was officially opened in the Nostitz Palace on November 25, 2004; for the Office of the General Commissioner the purpose of this exhibition is to present to the general public the historical successes of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic at World Expositions. The exhibition also includes the winning proposal for the Czech Pavilion and exposition at the upcoming Expo 2005 World Exposition. A second exhibition running concurrently is an exhibition of Czech art glass entitled "Captured by Light and Space." This unique presentation of the skill of Czech glassmakers is one of the supplementary programs for the Czech Republic's participation at the upcoming World Exposition. Both exhibitions are open to the public from November 26, 2004 to May 15, 2005, in the Nostitz Palace, the seat of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, which is the official patron of the exhibition.

A Visit to Japan

Mr. Zdeněk Novák, the First Deputy Minister of Culture, visited the Expo 2005 exposition grounds in Aichi during his recent trip to Japan. Accompanied by General Commissioner Vladimír Darjanin, he toured the entire grounds, including the Czech Pavilion and was acquainted with preparations for the Czech Republic's participation in this prestigious social and cultural event.

General Commissioners Meet

In November, Mr. Vladimír Darjanin, the General Commissioner for the Czech Republic and his deputy, Mr. Vladimír Války attended the second meeting of general commissioners held in Nagoya. The topics of this two-day meeting were the state of preparations on the part of the Japanese organizers and the presentation of additional rules and regulations for participating countries. The general commissioners' Steering Committee, which Vladimír Darjanin is a member of, met concurrently with this general meeting.

Project Robot

The organizers of Expo 2005 will be presenting their unique "Project Robot" during the World Exposition. In addition to fully functional robots whose tasks will include maintenance, security and conducting tourists, they will be presenting prototypes whose full potential will be realized in the near future. Five different types of robots will be working at Expo 2005. They will clean the exhibition grounds, ensure security, conduct visitors around the exhibition grounds in four different languages, talk and play with children and conduct disabled and handicapped visitors along barrier-free routes.

Flood of Japanese Investment Continues

At the present time, there are 145 Japanese firms registered in the Czech Republic. Of this number, 16 are involved in manufacturing, 3 in the developmental and strategic services, 4 in other fields and the remaining 77 in sales and commercial activities. These firms have made direct investments in the Czech Republic totaling almost US$2.5 billion and they have created 30,000 new jobs. The Japanese firms currently operating in the Czech Republic have reported very positive earnings and so many of them have already expanded their operations or are preparing to do so. CzechInvest, the government agency for supporting the development of businesses and investment is currently negotiating with another two dozen companies that are interested in beginning business activities in the Czech Republic.
