Nature´s Wisdom in an Ever Quickening World

The tremendous impact of technology, which every day makes the lives of billions of people around the world easier, is reflected in virtually all aspects of human activity. This technological boom, which began with the invention of the steam engine, changed in the mid-twentieth century with precipitous growth in many scientific fields. This in turn has led to change at a geometric rate.

A History of World Expositions - Part VI Sevilla 1992

It was King Juan Carlos I who in 1976 first had the idea of holding a world exposition (one that would connect back to the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition held in Seville). The idea gained the support of the Prime Minister Felipe Gonzales, a native of Seville. This together with the facts that Christopher Columbus is purportedly buried in Seville's cathedral, that he set sail on his voyage of discovery from this port city and that beginning in 1524 the Council for the Indies ruled Spain's overseas territories from Seville, meant that there was no more appropriate place to celebrate the quincentennial of the New World's discovery.

An executive committee was formed with Vavřečka, Jan Třebický and Ladislav F. Feierabend as its members.

From Brussels 1958 to Aichi 2005

With the rapidly approaching opening of the next world exposition in the Japanese prefecture of Aichi in 2005, memories of previous world expositions are returning for those of us who were there - in particular those held after the Second World War. The world since Brussels 1958 has made tremendous progress but has also seen significant and profound changes in many areas of human knowledge and activities. Changes in the purpose, importance and form of world expositions have been one indirect result.

Japanese Theater

At the turn of the twenty-first century, Japanese theater was the recipient of several accolades. In 2001, Noh, and its comic counterpart Kyogen, were placed on that year's UNESCO Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. These were followed in 2003 by Ningyo Johuri puppet theater (also known as "Bunraku"). The final Japanese form of theater performance - still awaiting a similar recognition - is Kabuki. More than once Japanese theater has influenced European stages and with its precise stylizations, storytelling, stage apparatus and acting techniques it is one of the most highly developed forms of theater in the world.

Horse racing is ever more popular

Horse racing takes place in the Czech Republic almost every Saturday and Sunday from the beginning of April until the end of October at one of a dozen racecourses, each of which has its own special character. Winter in Central Europe is too cold for training horses or for going to the racecourse. A typical race day offers eight races and may include flat racing, cross country steeplechase and hurdles races. Trotting also takes place in the Czech Republic, but separately from racing. Several of the racecourses are used for show jumping, three-day eventing, western racing, four-in-hand and other kinds of equestrian events.

First in Kladno

Until fairly recently wind was only thing moving across the fields that lie between the Výhybka and Kročehlavy districts in the central Bohemian city of Kladno and the nearby village of Velké Přítočno. Then at the end of the twentieth century construction equipment began to appear. This marked the beginning of a new era for this part of Kladno now known as the Kladno-South Enterprise Zone. One of the first investors here was also one the first Japanese investors in the country and the very first foreign investors in the city of Klado. This firm was Showa Aluminum, a company with almost a century of tradition behind it.

An Interview with Mr. Karel Žebrakovský, the Ambassador of the Czech republic to Japan

How would you evaluate modern life in Japan? What was the biggest surprise in Japan for you as a European?
I have an invaluable opportunity to get to know Japan, its inhabitants and their mentality from a wide range of perspectives. If I had to choose just one word to describe the basic characteristic of the Japanese people, that word would be "politeness." In my experiences, extreme politeness is the dominant and characteristic national trait of the Japanese.
