The Japanese like the Czech Repbulic

Could you please introduce the CzechInvest Agency to us?

The job of CzechInvest is to promote the Czech Republic abroad as an ideal place for foreign investment and to support the flow of direct foreign investment into the Czech Republic. CzechInvest is at the same time the only institution that is allowed to submit requests for investment incentives to the responsible government ministries and to provide information on the Czech Republic's current business and investment environment. Acknowledgements of the agency's work and the continually increasing flow of direct foreign investment in the Czech Republic is evidence that CzechInvest is doing its job well and that the Czech Republic is an attractive location for investors.

In recent years, Japanese investments here are increasing. What distinguishes these investments?

In the overall flow of direct foreign investment in the Czech Republic, Japan is in first place. There are today a total of 124 Japanese firms registered in the Czech Republic; these companies have committed themselves to invest a minimum of 2.3 billion dollars. These investments bring both the most modern technology and innovations and the latest management methods and good entrepreneurial ethics. What's more these investment projects are carried out responsibly and with a focus on the long term.

In which areas of investment are there the greatest interest?

The interests of Japanese firms are based on their strategy of increasing market share in the European market. Today firms operate here in many fields, for example in the electronics (Matsushita) and automobile (Toyota) industries, consumer goods and electronics (Daikin, Shimano) and even in textiles (Toray).

Many Japanese businessmen live here with there families as a part of doing business. How do they like the Czech Republic and Prague?

Our experience is that the Japanese really like the Czech Republic, primarily thanks to the high standard of living and cultural opportunities. They admire the history of our country and Prague, regularly attend concerts and the ballet and are enthusiastic golfers.

What is characteristic for the Japanese in your opinion?

The overall impression, behavior and manners of the Japanese are very cultivated. This is based on their innate respect for other people. It is still true that many Japanese are reluctant to say "no," or "I don't know." They are also very hospitable and value friendship. In business relations they are very strong negotiators. They respect the rules of gentlemen's agreements and what they say holds. If one of their partners fails to keep their word, they loose all credit and respect.

You travel to Japan quite often. What's made the biggest impression on you and are you still surprised by some things.

I don't unfortunately travel to Japan as often as I'd like. What always makes the biggest impression on me is the outstanding Japanese cuisine. I hope that I'll have the opportunities ton once again be surprised by some exotic delicacy.

These questions were asked of Martin Jahn, Managing Director of the CzechInvest Agency.
