JAPONSKOJAPONSKO

Last samurai

Nathan Algren, U.S. army captain survived the Little Big Horn battle, where Red Indians, who over numbered them, defeated the soldiers headed by general Custer. Algren, who is retired, drinks too much, until the Japanese emperor Meiji offers him the opportunity to train his army.

NEW ORDER IN THE OLD COUNTRY

Japan is the country with incredibly developed sense of the honour and tradition. When the young emperor, Meiji, tries to establish the new order, the samurais, who defend the traditional codices and values, rebel against him and his only option is to kill them all. This is the reason, why he asked the captain Algren for help. In Last Samurai movie Algren starts to train his army but when captured by samurais he starts to be fascinated with their ancient culture.

CLUSH OF VALUES

"General Custer was a madman," Algren says in the movie, "he sent two hundred and eleven soldiers against two thousand Red Indians." "Well" a samurai answers, "I like this general Custer." In this movie featuring Tom Cruise, such dialogues demonstrate the impassable barrier between the Euro American and Japanese cultures. In case you are interested in Japan and if you wish to understand it a little better you must see this movie. Which is also a good advice for those of you, who are just interested in samurai fighting or deep eyes of Tom Cruise.
