Montreal 1967

Our participation in the Montreal world exposition was presented in the pavilion by architects Miroslav Řepa and Vladimír Pýcha.

The body of the pavilion, with no windows and faced with clay tiles, was mounted on four supporting corner pillars and this was sharply contrasted by the glazed ground floor that was uninterrupted by any structural elements. The two-story building concealed an eccentrically located atrium.

The artists that were successful at the Brussels world exposition also participated in the realisation of the works of art and accompanying programs in Montreal. The Laterna Magika theatre repeated its show "Revue from a Box" up to fifteen times a day. Josef Svoboda and Emil Radok followed on from Brussels with their polyvision and diapolyekrán. For the first time in the world the kinoautomat was presented – the first interactive film equipment in the world. Radúz Činčera came up with the idea of being able to choose during the course of a film from different options as to how it should continue. The protagonist was Miroslav Horníček, who not only looked out from the screen but also made direct contact with the audience.

The Commissioner General of the Czechoslovak participation in Montreal was Miroslav Galuška.
The Czechoslovak pavilion was visited by an unbelievable figure of over 8 million visitors – which represents 4/5 of the population of today’s Czech Republic.
