Czech Glass Week

One of the accompanying programs and special events during the Czech Republic's participation in the World Exposition EXPO 2005 in Aichi was a significant presentation of Czech atelier glass in Japan.

The main part of Czech Glass Week is a Czech atelier glass show, accompanied by presentations and works of Czech glass designers. The curator of the unique exposition, which the Czech public could view at Nosticky palace in Prague up until halfway through May of this year, is professor Sylva Petrová. The presentation of Czech atelier glass in Toyama was linked with the second year of the international glass-making triennial.

The exhibition is connected to the tradition and fame of Czech atelier glass in Japan, and is a cross-section of contemporary creations from all generations of glass-making designers, including the youngest generation. The exposition is made up of a collection of 42 glass objects from 28 designers and represents various forms of glass processing, with an emphasis on large glass sculptures. Among the represented creators are Václav Cigler, Bohumil Eliáš, Jiří Harcuba, František Janák, Vladimír Kopecký, Stanislav Libenský - Jaroslava Brychtová, Ivan Mareš, Alena Matějková, Pavel Mrkus, Ivana Šrámková, Martin Velíšek, Dana Zámečníková and others.

The prefecture of Toyama is a Japanese glass-making centre and has long-standing relations with the Czech Republic. The Institute of Glass Art has its headquarters here, where since its establishment Czech glass artists have operated pedagogically. "Czech atelier glass is extremely popular in Japan and during the last few decades it has developed a strong position for itself. The Japanese cultural public constantly has in its subconscious the extremely creative potential of Czech glass artists, who presented themselves to Japan for the first time at the World Exposition EXPO 70 in Osaka. Using this accompanying program we would like to familiarise Japanese viewers with the development that Czech atelier glass has undergone during the last 35 years. I believe that we will capture the interest of the Japanese public with this unique project and that we will extend the privity of contemporary Czech art and culture as such", added the commissioner-general Vladimír Darjanin.
