Natures Wisdom - the Main Theme

World expositions have always reflected current trends in society. The 19th century was captivated by technology and the progress of the industrial revolution. In the 20th century the world shrunk thanks to information technology. The 21st century is characterised by awareness of the debt to nature. For this reason the theme of EXPO 2005 Aichi is unequivocally – "The Wisdom of Nature".

Exposition of Global Harmony

The human desire for expansion continues. Highly developed technology is exploiting natural resources with the objective of achieving still greater progress. This represents a terrible burden for the natural environment, exceeding its ability for self-renewal. The time has come for all people, as members of the international community, to co-operate on the creation of a sustainable and harmonious coexistence of all forms of life on earth and make every effort to renew the natural relationship between humanity and nature as well as between people themselves. The time has come to repay the debt owed to nature.

A condition for success is a global perspective and the creation of a global society capable of mutual coexistence within the framework of cultures and civilisations.

EXPO 2005 Aichi is an ideal opportunity for the linking of all forces and cultures of the world in this endeavour. The world of the 21st century must learn to use the resources of our planet in the most effective way as well as employ all its wisdom to find a method of how to live and solve the problems of the modern age as the basics for survival, the issues of the environment, population, the production of energy and foodstuffs in harmony with nature. For this reason the Japanese organisers have also termed this exposition "Exposition of Global Harmony".

Subtopic of the EXPO

In order that the theme of the world exposition "The Wisdom of Nature" be executed as faithfully as possible and at the same time to ensure the widest possible participation of countries from around the world, the main theme has been divided into three sub-themes.

  1. Nature as a universal foundation
Humanity of the 21st century should find new inspiration and new directions for its existence in the model of civilisation of the space age in the latest successes of space technology and the history of the planet. It is necessary to look for new solutions to the problems of population and the environment through undistorted experiments using biotechnology and information technology.
  2. The art of life
Art and the everyday customs of cultures throughout the world should provide inspiration for creative thought in relation to how to live and find new ways of life in the 21st century.
  3. The development of the eco-community
The object of this theme is to demonstrate the modern recycling society of the 21st century, the aim of which should be to achieve the ideal balance between the development of the society and the environment.
The aim of the exposition is to support understanding of relationships between human activities and nature. The current period demonstrates the necessity of encouraging the co-operation of the whole of humanity in renewing the status quo between technology and the life style of man. It is also important to exchange different and original ideas with the objective of achieving greater harmony with the global ecosystem. EXPO 2005 Aichi intends to contribute, by means of experimental prototypes, practical demonstrations and the creation of a global network of technicians, specialists and citizens, to the search for the strategies and methods necessary for achieving growth in the new dimension.
